Living with a children's author isn't as easy as it looks!

Reading

Mom reads a lot. Mostly on her Kindle,

kindle head

…but sometimes she reads big shopping bags full of kiddie books from the public library.

library books

I don’t like when she reads, because it means she will pretty much ignore me the whole time.

Hello? Does anybody see me?

Hello? Does anybody see me?

This is unacceptable. And boring!

Even worse, sometimes she goes to Barnes and Noble and reads books in the cafe,

bn

while I watch out the window waiting….

screen and flower

She keeps making lists of books she wants to read. She reads grown up books, young adult, easy reader, middle grade, and lots and lots of picture books. One of her lists says:

Cutting for Stone

Night Circus

Biting the Moon

The Silver Star

The View from Saturday

Umbrella Summer

Eggs

Keeper

War and Watermelon

Zero Tolerance

The Giver

Rules of Summer

Charlie Bumpers Versus the Teacher of the Year

Each Kindness

Yikes! That’s a lot of time spent ignoring me!

....Hello...?

….Hello…?

Mom says, “It’s my job to read.” and “How can I call myself an author if I don’t read?” and “Please don’t drool on the books!”

head in bag

I do not know how to read. Mom says that’s pretty clear….

  1. LOL! Poor Cupcake, mommy still loves you! Your sooo cute setting on the ottoman and laying in your bed. You better not lay in front of the garage door though. 😉

  2. Love your little bed Cupcake 🙂 you poor little Darling, looks like Moms pretty wrapped up in her books. Come play at my pad 🙂 xx0xx

    Mollie and Alfie

  3. Our Mummy reads too much too! Whee love that last pigture!

    Nutty, Nacho, Buddy & Basil
    xxxx

  4. Cupcake, although you can’t read, you’re telling!…and at least we noticed you 😉
Pawkisses for a happy day 🙂

  5. Oh Cupcake..it’s a travesty…look at your sweet self all lonesome 🙂 pretty sure that mum still has time for cuddles after lots of reading….think Doc is planning mischief over here while we are away…hmmmm.perhaps you could join him hahaha have a great day and hugs Fozziemum xx

  6. You should come play with me next time she is reading!!

  7. Cupcake come and stay with us and chill in our garden 🙂

  8. Wow Cupcake you can better park than my mom (much better!) I’m always boring too when my mom reads a book, and with this kindle-thingy I can’t remove or shred pages, how mean!
Thanks for the list of good books! I only know the book of Lisa Graff/Umbrella Summer, it’s a good book for “grey” days.

    • You know how it is, E. The Kindle is definitely not as delicious as the real books. Sometimes the picture books taste like candy. And sweat. And peanut butter. But I’m not really allowed to taste them… officially.

      Love and licks,
      C

  9. Can’t you snuggle up next to her while she reads? That’s what I do, then when I get too bored I stand up and put my head over the book!

  10. Archie’s sentiments exactly when I’m writing at the computer or reading. Atleast when I’m rreading he’ll curl up at my feet on the recliner. But, he thinks that my job is to entertain him all day long. He forgets about the early morning and bedtime body massages he gets, and playing ball. Cupcake, you should write a book! Like your Mom, I’m always guessing what Archie is thinking.

  11. Oh, LOVE this post Cupcake!!!! I love to read as well and long to be a famous author one day. She still loves you beyond compare little one, please don’t ever doubt that!!!! Tell your mom I just adore her ottoman with the cursive words…There are few things more relaxing than reading a wonderful book and petting your dog’s head while they are curled up beside you!!!! Happy day!!!!

    • Thanks, W2W. Sometimes Mom and I have to fight over the ottoman. She says the word, “EXCUSE ME!” so she can put her sore leg up there. It’s complicated, but somehow, I squeeze in there anyway.

      Love and licks,
      C

  12. The sacrifices you pups have to make Cupcake, but in the long run it’s what keeps you in biscuits. 🙂

  13. Poor Cupcake! You are so funny 🙂 All you have to do is sit in mom’s lap while she’s reading. Then she can read with one hand and pat you with the other. Even better, get her to read out loud. Then you can hear the story too 🙂

    • Good plan, S. Mom loves when I squeeze in next to her or on plop on top of her. She usually says the word, “Get offa me. I can’t breathe!” That’s good… right…?

      Love and licks,
      C

  14. Cupcake, you have to find some ways to keep your mom’s attention! We think you’ve got it under control. Thank your mom for her book list!

  15. Dear Cupcake,
I share your sentiment for reading…all things that detract from our time of attention are to be avoided at all costs. And when all else fails, curl up as cozy as you can on your mom and make “the face.” That usually works for me. 😉
    Lots of love,
    Wiles

  16. Oh Cupcake, you poor pitiful thing! Does your mom ever read to you? Sometimes my mommy reads out loud to me. It puts me to sleep, but then again most things put me to sleep. 🙂

    • Sleep is good, Miss HL. Mom doesn’t read to me, but sometimes, we go to work at the library and kids read to me. I don’t fall asleep. I jump out of my skin, instead. It’s so exciting.

      Love and licks,
      C

  17. OMD Cupcake…our mom does a lot of reading too butt she doesn’t even have the excuse of it being part of her job!

Are you road napping again!! You are CRAZY!! BOL xxx

    • The road just calls to me, W and S. I can’t resist the heat and the dirt on the concrete. That was just the edge of the parking lot, so Mom didn’t have to drag me to the gutter for safety.

      Love and licks,
      C

  18. Poor Cuppycake…..nothing worse than having our Moms ignore us. Well, maybe not getting treats is worse but being ignored is pretty bad. Good thing you have the street to take naps in and your bed to pout in…..with that cute face staring at her how COULD she not scoop you up and give you a big hug???????? Well, may I suggest you eat that list of books she has? Just an idea – it might taste good too.

    Kitty Hugs, Sammy

    • Thanks, S. I can’t eat Mom’s list of books, because it’s on her phone. Yuck! I will try to eat, slurp, and slobber on as many of the books as I can, though!

      Love and licks,
      Cupcake

  19. Oh poor cupcake!

When you’re next feeling neglected come on over and I’ll play with you, I couldn’t ignore you! 🙂

    Wags to all

    Your pal Snoopy 🙂

  20. Oh Cupcake, those photographs of you are so adorable. It is hard for us doggies to understand when our Mommies have to do Mommy things. We always think that everything is all about us, but as long as you sit or take a nappy next to your Mommy while she is reading, you can at least share some time with her! Our Mommy has been working very hard on all of her paper mache projects, so we just nap next to her and she talks to us. We feel better. Huggies!

  21. OH, you don’t know how to read? I thought that was your impersonation of a cat. *giggles*

  22. Aww poor llittle cupcake! If only you could read too, I bet you’d like it. Kirby doesn’t like when I read either..

  23. The trick is to get your Mom to read aloud to you! Good for everybody!

  24. Didn’t you go to doggy school Cupcake? And don’t they teach you how to read there?

  25. Our Mom does the same thing. We just poot in her general direction till she pays attention to us.

    Sam

  26. Zero tolerance – that is the book for you! Just read it and … ACTION!!! For example, you could buy a bookworm that would eat up those boring paper piles. Perhaps there are kindle-consuming bookworms, too.

  27. I’m sure you know how to read and you are just being rebellious!

  28. Oh cupcake:-( Maybe mummy could read to you?
My mummy has only read one of those books, the Night Circus, but she enjoyed it, hope your mummy does too.

  29. Cupcake, You don’t have to read to appreciate that Mom is actually doing this to keep you in dog kibble. More books = smarter Mom = more cookies for you. It is that simple. You can also help by keeping her lap warm. BOL – Lorian

  30. LOL! Oh, my daughter bought me a Kindle for my brithday/christmas present and I love it too!!! Now, that last picture had us roaring with laughter…. too darn funny! 🙂

  31. Cupcake,

Your expressions while your mom is reading are priceless. Your face says it all. Maybe you should consider an acting career?

    -Bella and DiDi

  32. I also prefer that Mom not read or do anything when I am awake and ready to play or want pets…what’ with the book stuff anyways??? paw pats, Savannah

  33. Oh gosh – I don’t know how she could ignore a face like yours!
I think you might need to take up shredding books – but not sure what you could do about that Kindle….
