Living with a children's author isn't as easy as it looks!

Writers are always looking for inspiration. Mom is no exception. The other day, Mom and I took a ride to Meadowlands Environment Center for inspiration. She likes to be in nature to clear out her head.

Doggies like inspiration, too. I like to be in nature because it smells good!

The GPS lady told us we had arrived at our destination.

Really?

Really?

Mom said naughty words about her because we had so NOT arrived at our destination.

This looks like a good place to get murdered.

This looks like a good place to get murdered.

Mom drove and complained and drove some more and complained some more and somehow found the place anyway.

Meadowlands

She was inspired by the beautiful flowers and the views and bunches of summer camp field trip kids scooping goop out of the swamp to study.”

I was inspired by the smelly old swamp. I was pretty sure I could swim in there, but Mom said the word, “Time to go home and write.” and “Inspiration has to find me working.” and “Don’t even think about it.”

Mom still only “works” for an hour a day, but she works very hard during that hour – doing her KidLit Summer School stuff, checking in on her critique group, and working on new things that she’s writing and old things that she’s fixing. I sure hope when Inspiration drops around it comes at the right time. Otherwise, it’ll find her eating a donut…

…or watching TV or reading her Kindle or talking on the phone or God forbid giving me a bath.

  1. Cupcake i see your face and the urge to pinch your cheeks is overwhelming..in fact you inspire me to go out and pinch dog cheeks..i dislike the GPS lady as she also told me i was at my destination…well a dead end road warning me that cattle are free range was not quite the destination..but it did lead me to a place that i found inspiration..and it was purely by chance(and a dodgy GPS) i cannot help you with the bath debacle..that is beyond my capabilites but i do feel for you 🙂 i am sure Mum will have found inspiration..the quote is very true..i found it ..i just had to work at it from a different angle..and fuelled by cake…loves Fozziemum xxxx

    • Thanks, FM. Free range cattle sounds like my best dream come true. I have never seen actual cattle in my life. But once I ate a butterfly.

      Love and licks,
      C

      • Hahaha…i bet that butterfly tasted dang good Cupcake :)…i have a sneaky suspicion all that walking beef may skeer you though 🙂 loves Fozziemum xxc

  2. “This looks like a good place to get murdered”…OMD…Cupcake, you CRACK us UP!!! We cannot stop BOL at that!!!
    Wally & Sammy

    • Thanks, W and S. Thank goodness Mom got us moving again before the criminals were up and shaved. I can defend her from the mailman, but I’m not sure about actual murderers….

      Love and licks,
      C

  3. Good grief, Cupcake! Good place to get murdered! Mercy! I really like the quote about being found working. My mom works all the time. So she will really be ready or maybe that’s not quite he meant. Lady Caroline

    • I think that’s exactly what he meant, Lady C. Working is working. It’s a good thing for moms to do so they don’t get lazy and spoiled…. Like me!

      Love and licks,
      C

  4. I think GPS ladies are afraid of doggies. One of my doggy blog-friends wanted to visit a dog show – and the GPS lady tried to send them into the opposite direction… Perhaps you could give her some gentle licks and slobbery kisses – or a good bath (instead of you!)!

    • Thanks, K. I think I would like to give slobbery kisses to the GPS lady. Mom will say the word, “That’s disgusting.” Plus then we will need to go to the car wash.

      Love and licks,
      C

  5. That park looked wonderful! I love smelling flowers too. As for the GPS lady, I think SHE needs a GPS before she dare gives another single direction! *ear licks* Noodle

    P.S.
Sorry you had to get a bath 😦

  6. My bipeds seem to have given upon the GPS lady – she was always telling them they had passed their destination and needed to turn around as soon as possible!

The park looks a fun place to visit. It’s a shame you didn’t get to have a swim in the swamp!

    • Thanks, C. Since I have white furs like you, I think I would’ve looked beautiful with swamp water and duckweed all over me. Plus I have never been swimming, so that would’ve been an adventure in itself.

      Love and licks,
      C

  7. Cupcake I would like to help you… butt there is water included…. I can call the coast guards, maybe they can rescue you with a speed boat? You probably have the same GPS-girl like me… she sent us in the middle of a corn field where that evil Randal Flagg from Mr. Kings story lured for new victims… what a mean beast, huh?

    • OMG, E. A cornfield!? That is not OK. Doggies of the Corn. GAH! Nobody wants to see that. If a speed boat is anything like a golf cart, I’m pretty sure I’m afraid of it.

      Love and licks,
      C

  8. My dear Cupcake….what a nice adventure even if you didn’t get to swim in the swamp……as for the water torture – you do look pretty darn miserable BUTTTT I bet after you got out and got dried off you felt yummy and smelled a lot better! Your Mom gets inspiration from many places – gardens, walks, and YOU!

    Love, Sammy

Cupcake I want that donut, it has inspired me to go off my diet

    • Thanks, F.!! I’m happy to have been an inspiration. You’re not alone. I wanted that donut, too. I hope you had better luck than I did….

      Love and licks,
      C

  10. I splurged and had a donut yesterday!!! Didn’t look as pretty as the one in your picture. It is a lovely place your Mom went to get inspiration. I need some inspiration but better some motivation and a little less rain so I can get out and about! That’s a sad bath face but I bet you really didn’t mind too much?

    • Thanks, Pix. Too much rain cramps my style, too. So does the no-end-in-sight-heat-wave around here. Every time I take a street nap, Mom says the word, “Seriously? GAH! Too hot!”

      Love and licks,
      C

  11. Cupcake, love the nature preserve you found, despite the nasty GPS lady (GPS- going places slowly?). Our mum finds inspiration in nature, too. But we don’t find it in baths. Unless they are mud baths outside…
    Two orange pups

  12. Hey that’s not too far from our hometown of South Orange. Looks like a great walk, we’ll have to swing by on our next trip home.

  13. Poor Cupcake, I can’t help you with the bath. I can’t even help myself. Last time, Mom tricked me by calling Riley, like he was going to get something good in the groom room. She knew I wouldn’t be able to resist. Ughh!

    • Moms are tricky about baths, L. And there are usually treats involved. That’s the only upside….

      Love and licks,
      C

  14. SWAMP!!! We have a swamp on our place…Mom always gives me the talk…

    Linda

  15. GPS!!!! Ugh!!!

  16. Oh Cupcake you are even more beautiful amongst flowers! And Charley wanted to fly to you right away to save you form that bath…she agrees totally horrible and unnecessary!! Love to mom too, xo Johanna

    • Thanks J and Charley. I think the flowers really bring out my spots. And the dumb look on my face. Bath-wise, whenever Mom makes up her mind, there’s no reasoning with her.

      Love and licks,
      C

  17. ‘This looks like a good place to get murdered.’ I sort of snorted out loud at that one. Too funny.

Also, Choppy feels your bath time pain, Cupcake.

  18. Why would your Mom bath you when you never even went in the swamp … is it because you told us all about her eating doughnuts ???

  19. And here I thought you were inspiration enough. I guess there’s a lot more stuff out there to get the creative juices glowing. A word or two of advice. Take the bath. It will inspire even more hugs than you already get! 🐶😍

    • You’re right about the bath, G. Hugs and treats always come with a bath. Inspirations can be anywhere. Even in the bathtub, apparently….

      Love and licks,
      C

  20. Hey Cupcake, you just never know when inspiration will strike, so it’s always good to be open for it. And baths aren’t that bad of a thing; they usually result in loads of treats or hugs and that’s never bad. 🙂

  21. Cupcake, you sure do not look happy about that bath. Too bad the Mom didn’t get more inspired. Maybe she should eat another donut. At least you got a nice walk out of the deal. Take care.

  22. Sometimes the GPS lady does not know what she is doing. I changed my voice to a man, I feel much better yelling at a man. LOL

    • Wait a minute, that should say, “I changed my GPS’ voice to a man’s voice.” I still speak with a female voice.

      • Well, this is a relief. It’s good to keep your own female voice. THAT’S the voice you need to yell at the GPS guy! Let him have it!!

        Love and licks,
        C

  23. Maybe you need to write a scratch and sniff book! You could include all your favorite scents.

Cupcake – does this mean you have to get wet with real water instead of your own spit?
Luv Hannah and Lucy xx xx

  25. Cupcake, you and McKinley are such lucky pups. You have people who love you and food in your tummies, nice outfits to wear when it is cold, and snuggles and loves. McKinley thinks you have it easy about the bath as I take her to a groomer. 😉

    • Groomer! Yikes! I think baths are scary enough. I can’t imagine being scared without Mom there to give me treats. McKinley is braver than I thought!

      Love and licks,
      C

  26. Cupcake – Glad to see that you and Mom are up to your cheeky ways. Stay safe and dry. – Lorian of DogDaz Zoo

  27. Wow, what a great trip! Dad says bad things to his GPS too.. what is up with that? If Trevor were here he would let it know he thought it was all wet …. Looks like you had fun! Bath? We are out of here Cupcake!

    -the collies

    • Thanks, Collies. I think those GPS people are sneaky and also big, fat liars. Mom has a love/hate relationship with hers. Mostly hate.

      Love and licks,
      C

  28. Cupcake, I just nominated you for the 8 pictures of happiness challenge, here. http://wp.me/p4mIeY-jp
