Living with a children's author isn't as easy as it looks!

“That however small the chance might be of striking lucky, the chance was there.”

~Roald Dahl~

I believe in luck. Mom does too. She buys lottery tickets, picks up lucky pennies, sails through amber traffic lights, and goes with her gut on life decisions. Most days she just feels lucky to be where she is, how she is, and who she is.

That said, she is waiting patiently (NOT patiently) for her ideas to gel, her stories to develop, and the right piece to end up in the right hands at the right time. THAT will be a lucky day.

My luckiest day was when I was rescued from the kill-shelter in Georgia,

At the shelter with my puppies. They got adopted. I was left behind.

and my other luckiest day was when Mom found me at a Saturday rescue event at PetSmart.

My Gotcha Day. Home sweet home at last…

At my forever home, I am lucky every day. I don’t eat the lottery tickets, even when they fall on the floor. I lick lucky pennies, even though they are named “Filthy.” I sail through amber traffic lights since I have no choice and go with my gut on life decisions, mostly because my brain is so tiny.

Chances to be lucky are always there, just like Roald Dahl says. When Mom is cooking, my lucky day is when I get some FloorFood. Lots and lots of times she says, “Don’t lick the floor.” and, “Stop slurping like a weirdo.” and “Oops! Come and lick this up, please.”

Yeah. I thought so…. #floorfood

My new coat was a lucky find, since there is a crazy cold snap in my neighborhood, and I have been shivering a lot on my walks. I am warm and cozy in my new sherpa-lined coat.

I am lucky that Mom takes me for road trips to lots of pretty and fun parks near our house

and also she takes me lots of other places too. Covid taught us about curbside pickups and drive through foods. So much fun! Plus sometimes there are PupCups and ice cream cones. But even when all I get is the bottom of the coffee cup or the smell of the oatmeal, I am lucky to be along for the ride and not waiting alone at home.

Oh, Cupcake — I am SO glad you were rescued and adopted! I don’t comment much, but I love every post you write. Sending hugs to you and your wonderful Mom!

    • Thanks, B! Yay! We are always happy to hear from you. We are sending hugs right back – and possibly a slurpy kiss, too.

      Love and licks,

  2. mr. dahl was a wise man, he knew a lot about the real luck… and we think even if our mom buys lottery tickets too, she still won da jackpot. it sits on da sofa or lays in da bed or is indaway….

    • So true, frens. There’s a jackpot and there’s a JACKPOT! It’s the most fun when that prize gets indaway.

      Love and licks,

  3. Oh Cupcake I hope you don’t mind that I am constantly telling you how adorable my Mom and I think you are….you are….and lucky – that kill shelter was a scary and bad place and I’m so happy your Mom found you. I hope your babies got homes too. I love your new super warm coat – you look very fashionable in it! Looks like it protects your tummy from the snow that likes to attack you.

Warm hugs from me and Mom

    • Thanks, T and Mom. The shelter was a nightmare but being wild on the street for 3 years was no picnic either. It’s the broken roads that take us to where we belong. And I am definitely where I belong, so I am grateful.

      Love and licks,

  4. Cupcake, I am lucky to know you my sweet friend. Your new coat is simply fabulous! You look great in it and I bet it is toasty warm. Paw hugs dear girl.

    • Thanks, S and Mom L. My new coat is keeping me very cozy, even though I can barely walk in it because of the puffiness. I needed puffy today because it was -5 outside.

      Love and licks,

CUPCAKE! So good to see you and your mommy! And by the way, you really rock that new coat! The color is just made for you, too! I am so glad your babies were adopted and then, you too! What a lucky twosome you and your mom are! You have one another!

    • Thanks, KI. Mom and I are quite the pair. She can never be bored with me around. She says I have 2 modes – asleep or in trouble. There is nothing in between. I think that’s what she likes about me…

      Love and licks,

  6. Chia: I look just like one of those puppies of yours. Maybe we’re related! XOXOXOXOX (P.S. My lucky day was when brother Andrew brought me home and stuck me in the downstairs kennel in the middle of the night and Mom found me down there and her and Dad fell in love with me!!)
Lucy: Floor licking is great. Mom always thanks me for helping her out. You’re new sherpa coat is awesome, and you look wonderful in it, Cupcake.
Xena: Yep, us pups all have wonderful things to be thankful for. Reading about yours makes me think more about mine, even though my tummy didn’t feel good last night and I lost my everything in my tummy. Us schnauzers hate giving up food. XOX Xena

    • I hope your tummy is feeling lots better today, X. I don’t believe in food waste either. I do see a resemblance, C. You may be related to one of my babies. Thanks, L. I agree – floors are delicious, even though Mom swears to God I am trying to find poison to eat down there. Why would floors be poisonous…?

Cupcake, along with all of those lucky things the best is that you and your mom found each other. 💕 By the way we love your new coat, you do look toasty warm. ~ Belle, Bessie and Bea Pups

    • Thanks, B, B, and B. I am very happy with my coat, although some people might say I look dumpy in it. I have not shivered since I got it.

      Love and licks,

  8. You don’t get much luckier. Cozy coat. FloorFood. And the bear! It never even touched you. Good luck with the cold weather *jealous*

    • Thanks a bunch, G. Be careful what you wish for. Cold is nice when it’s wintertime, but this craziness is BEYOND cold. It’s cold that makes your face hurt.

      Love and licks,

  9. Love your new coat, Cupcake. Stay warm!

Hello Cupcake! I am so glad your Mom rescued you – you are a cutie!! My Alex is also a rescue (and so were all of my dogs). Keep warm. Today, where we live, it is in the teens with wind chill to ZERO – BRRRR.

    • Thanks, A and S! Here in NJ, our weather is pretty much the same as yours. It is definitely a puffy coat kind of day!

      Love and licks,

  11. I am so SO VERY GLAD you made it all the way to Mom! Lucky you always. Happy GotaYa DAY!!!

  12. Sounds like you are one lucky pup, Cupcake. But mostly you’re very deserving! Stay warm sweet girl.

    • Thanks, M. I am staying very warm inside while the silly wind chills wait for me outside. We will deal with that craziness later.

You sure have lots of blessings to count! Oh, and luck too!

  14. Those do look like fun walks.

  15. You need to prepare so when luck comes you are ready.

  16. Lulu: “Sorry I’m still stuck on ‘don’t lick the floor’. Why wouldn’t you lick the floor? That’s where the food lands. If we weren’t supposed to lick the floor, gravity would work backwards and food would fall up to the ceiling, am I right?”

    • You are always right, Lu. We lick where the foods are (or could be.) That does not explain why the bedroom floor needs to be licked, but you never know….

Love and licks – lots of licks,

  17. That’s a nice coat, Cupcake, just what you need to keep you warm. I’m lucky too…because I know you😸 Good Luck Pawkisses to you and your mommy too🐾😽💞

  18. Mom makes me laugh, especially ‘sailing through yellow lights’ 🤣 I bet you make her laugh too. It’s one big happy circle! I can’t even believe someone left you at a shelter, thank goodness for second chances. Our local shelter had to ask people to care for found pets at home through the cold snap we had because they were filled to the rafters. I makes me so mad, then so sad that these people are so lame and careless about a pet they made a commitment to. Bless your heart for being a lucky doggo and giving lots of love back to everyone you meet 💗💗xK

    • Thanks, K. Mom and I do have a lot of laughs during the day around here. Once when my new coat was too puffy, my leg got lost inside the arm hole, and I face-planted into a snow pile. Mom laughed all the way home (after she found my lost leg and pulled it back through the sleeve). Yeah. It doesn’t take much…

      Love and licks,

  19. Love Dahl’s quote! Cupcake, you hit the jackpot with your mom!

  20. Cupcake, you are a lucky pup! I know your Mom thinks she was lucky to have found you and feels lucky to share her life with you. When I read this post and read your thoughts it makes me smile. I see your Mom at the wheel sailing through amber traffic lights with you in her sporty car and it cracks me up! I read this post and it makes me count my blessings and makes me happy to be along for the ride… this ride that is my life. Hugs from me to you and your Mom.

    • Yay, Pix. We love that you look at life like a fun ride. Me, too! I like knowing that we can all sail through those amber lights cyber-together. And when we hit the inevitable bump in the road, we will sail on past that, too. xoxo

      Love and licks,
