Living with a children's author isn't as easy as it looks!

“There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now.”

Hugh Laurie

In case Mom’s weekly writing challenge isn’t challenging enough this month, her writing group named LindaVijiConnieLaurieJenandOtherJen is also having a June Challenge. Everybody in the group is working on a new (or old) story and posting new versions each week for everybody to look at and share about. Ready or not!

Mom had a new story already started with 2 pathetic sentences. Two sentences! It sat there and sat there till the challenge. Now it is getting attention and making progress. It’s pretty lame, but it’s getting better.

Speaking of lame- I sniffed this gigantic, weird mushroom outside this weekend. I checked underneath it to see if any sprites or fairies lived there. They do not. It’s just a big, nasty mushroom – serving no purpose.

Mom thinks my street naps serve no purpose, but I say street naps warm me up.

Ditto my sidewalk naps,

grass naps,

and naps under cars.

I think learning new tricks serves no purpose, but Mom says tricks help my tiny brain stay sharp.

I smell Cheerios! How does this thing work?

So I bowl,

play Tic-Tac-Toe,

and ring my bell for cookies.

I guess purpose is relative. In Mom’s stories, her characters have to have purpose. So do their actions. Maybe they should take a street nap…

  1. we love that quote… our humans should stick with it… to enjoy da now is the best thing and it never will stress you out….. we love that Bell the mama had it for Easy … but he overused that gadget , so we are now a bell free household LOL

    • Easy was a man after my own heart. I over-use the bell A LOT. Mom has to pick it up and put it on the counter sometimes because I can’t stop ringing it even when there are 100 treats in my belly.

      Love and licks,
      C

  2. I love this quote.

  3. My Mom likes Hugh Laurie a whole lot AND that quote is wonderful…….I know I serve a purpose like you do Cupcake – we keep our Moms happy and entertained – that’s truly a worthwhile purpose right? You really are a very smart girl learning so many tricks. Makes you even MORE special…… 🙂

    Hugs, Teddy

    • You are 100% right, T. We are definitely entertaining. That in itself is a valuable, precious, rare skill.

      Love and licks,

Teddy said it for me as well, Cupcake. We all serve the same purpose…to love our families and give them unswerving love. AND find the Cherrios!

  5. I think street naps (and blankies even for adults) might just be key in keeping us secure when we feel things are flying apart. We need to do things that give us comfort so we can stay strong. Having a purpose is BIG!

    • Definitely, Pix! Purpose is big. Comfort is important – maybe more important than purpose. I mean 90 degree street naps and bellies filled with treats….? Oh yeah!

      Love and licks,
      C

Maybe the purpose of the nasty mushroom was to give you practice sniffing for sprites and fairies. You know how to tell when they aren’t there. As for the outside naps, totally makes sense that its a way to warm up. Great idea! ~ nose nudges Bonnie, Belle and Bessie Pups

    • Thanks, B, B, and B. I practiced every day on that giant mushroom. Each time we went out, I checked it. Never found anything magical out there. Then it disappeared. Maybe that was the magic!

      Love and licks,
      C

  7. You are one smart CUPCAKE!!! Boomer

  8. C, you know tons of tricks but who wants to do tricks all the time. Good for you…picking and choosing which tricks to preform.

    S.

  9. All our actions have purpose, C, and we bet all yours do too, even if you or your Mom don’t always know what they are. We think you are a very talented girl. XOX Xena and Lucy

    • Thanks, X and L. We doggies are shrewd to keep our motives secret. Keeping moms guessing is part of our job.

      Love and licks,
      C

  10. What a great quote. You caught on pretty quickly to the “Ding” game, Cupcake. The sound also is good for your endorphins.

    • Thanks, P. My endorphins must be off the charts. I ring the bell like a maniac till Mom has to pick it up and hide t from me.

      Love and licks,
      C

  11. When I take a long walk, I need a grass nap, too!

  12. Naps and games are important activities for a pup. They’d probably be good for moms too.

  13. I need that bell…MOL…We love that quote, Cupcake and now I need a nap…come and join me 😉 😸Pawkisses for a Wonderful Day🐾😽💞

  14. Hmmm 🤔. Maybe you should be writing books. About mushrooms 🍄 and fairies 🧚🏼‍♀️ and grass 🌱😴 naps and tricks. 😉

  15. Lulu: “Hmm, that mushroom seems like a place our friend Producer Smurf would hang out. Maybe it’s one of his summer homes and he’s just not there at the moment …”
