Living with a children's author isn't as easy as it looks!

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Then quit. No use being a damn fool about it.”
W.C. Fields~

Sometimes it’s good to follow W.C.’s advice. Mom has been trying to teach me to play Tic-Tac-Toe, and it hasn’t been going well.

She tried it with Cheerios on the board,

no Cheerios in the board,

and treats on the board.

Every attempt ends with her calling me knucklehead, naughty, clueless, silly, and thickheaded.

So yes, we are about ready to quit. We may still play for fun, but Mom knows that like Fetch, I will never learn this game.

Mom has not yet succeeded in selling Book #2 or eBook #2. Nevertheless, she will NOT follow W.C.’s advice. She doesn’t write every day like she used to. Apparently, quarantine is too busy to fit in a writing hour on a regular basis.

But she still works on stories and poems. She writes them, reads them when her critique partners write them, revises them, and once in a while she submits them. Apparently, when you’re a writer, that’s what you do.

In Mom’s latest story, she is using facts about an insect. Facts! That is new in her writing life. Truth be told, facts are new in her real life, too. She makes things up a lot. But she is suddenly doing research and taking notes.

How long will this last? Will this story ever be finished? Will it ever get past 18 words? I can’t picture it, but we’ll see, I guess.

Blerg. It’s like she’s trying to learn Tic-Tac-Toe or something….

  1. we love that quote!!! to quit is better at the end than to fail better right?

  2. You’re too cute 🐶 💕

  3. Mr. Fields was a smarty…….and Cupcake I know that YOU know how to play Tic Tac Toe but if you let your Mom know that you do, it wouldn’t keep her as BUSY as she is trying to teach it to you right? Right! You’re a smartypants girl and know a lot more than she thinks you know (shhhhh….let’s keep that quiet!). I do the same kind of thing – play dumb – it makes Mom spend more time with me. HA I have a feeling that if your Mom keeps on writing and submitting that someone will publish her work – these things take time. Too much time some would say (like my Mom did back when she was writing!).

Hugs to both of you from both of us
    Love, Teddy (and Mom)

    • You know the secret of how it all works, T. There’s the attention, and don’t forget all the treats we get while we “learn…” *giggle*

      Love and licks,

Cupcake, I wish I had you every day to start my day with the big smile I have on right now! That last video did me in. Almost snorted my coffee! (that was mom talking…I don’t drink coffee…just sayin).

    • I am sorry your mom doesn’t share her coffee with you, KI. My mom doesn’t either, except when she lets me lick the empty cup. Empty is the key word there… Joke’s on her. Turns out even the smell of the coffee is delicious! Smiles and giggles back to your mom.

      Love and licks,

Cupcake, We loved watching you play tic tac toe! The look on your face in the last video was priceless, we totally understand how you feel. Oh and tell your mom she gave our My Margret lots of ideas. Um thanks…?
~nose nudges Bonnie, Belle and Bessie Pups

    • Oh no! Ideas are the worst! Sorry, girls. I have a feeling it’ll be a long day for you when your My Margret starts working on your Tic-Tac-Skills. Yikes. Enjoy the treats while you’re “learning.”

      Love and licks,

  6. She’s giving you that “you’ve got to be kidding me” look in the last video! Hahaha!

  7. Bwahahaha! It’s a confusing game for us too, Cupcake. HuMoms are so weird.
    Your fur-iends,
    Elsa & Norman 🐾

  8. Hey Cupcake, did you tell your Mom there’s nothing in it for you if you just take one. So why not gobble two or more when you get the chance, right? Maybe if your Mom gave you hers when you just take one, now that might be incentive, right? We hope she figures out how to play. XOX Xena and Lucy

    • Thanks, X and L. You see the size of those things, right? I mean Cheerios are so tiny! If she’d put 10 in each square, we’d have a game. I hope she learns how to play, too!!

      Love and licks,

  9. Her greediness got her in trouble. She has that guilty, not sure if she was right or wrong look. Over time, I think she will learn. What if you praised her after each successful retrieval. Fun to watch. Our son called us today and he put his cell on speaker phone so his dog, Bo, could hear our voices. When he does Bo goes beserk and howls and is so excited to hear our voices. Then he goes into this interesting dog chatter like he has a lot to tell us. Funniest thing. Archie was afraid of the speaker phone and wanted no part of it. Bo loves it!

    • Sounds like Bo may be part human! Such a smart boy. I bet he’d nail the Tic-Tac-Toe game. I am more like our old buddy Archie. I don’t even like when the phone rings. It makes me cry a little each time. I wish Mom would adjust the board and have a slice of cheese in each square. Now THAT would be a game I can get behind!

      Love and licks,

  10. That whole tic tac toe thing is befuddling, Cupcake. Just let her know you want to go outside for a street nap! I was pretty sure your Mom would not follow W. C.’s advice and that is good I think. Too bad about the insect, fly… RIP. It is interesting she is doing facts, I find facts in real life to be kind of overwhelming and I like to make things up as I go along. I always tell the truth about real things but I like to kind of live in a bubble which has worked fairly well lately. I think you have the tic tac toe game down, you just have a different set of rules!

    • You get me, Pix. I AM nailing it with the Tic-Tac-Toe. It’s just that I am playing by my own rules. I guess that’s something like marching to my own drummer, which Mom says I do a lot. Also, listening to the jackasses in my head… whatever that means.

      Love and licks,

  11. Girl, that must have been confusing…Tik Tak Not…Tik Tak Stop… Tik Tak Ho… Tik Tak Go…I would ring for another servant too and probably make it very clear too…MOL…nobody can fool you, Cupcake, that’s obvious…MOL😹 I love your new picture with your new outfit and the matching mat…and enough tp to go😸Clean Pawkisses for a Happy Week ahead. Stay Safe Healthy and Yourselfie🙏🐾😽💞

    • Ha! Ha! Thanks, Little B. That game is a hundred times more baffling than Fetch. One rule that I know for sure is: If you see foods, eat first and ask questions later! I am dedicated to that rule. I appreciate your support…

      Love and licks,

  12. Charlee: “We think you did pretty well, Cupcake!”
Chaplin: “Yeah, from what we’ve heard of our brother Tucker who we never met, he would have gobbled down all the Os in about half a second. At least you stopped.”
    Charlee: “Eventually!”

  13. C, you playing Tic Tac Toe looks like us learning….us learning anything takes a very long time s our first concern is food. Shoko seems to learn faster than Budd and me. Shoko is not hung up on food like we are…and of course we have to eat it before anyone else gets it. mol

Your mom is learning many new ways to tackle a story. Excellent…these new ways spread her wings and make her an even better author.

  14. Hmmmm, Cupcake, maybe you failed only in teaching your Mom to think out of the box. On to think ON the box. MOL!!!

Cupcake, I watched that last video again and boy, if your mom didn’t get the message there…there’s no hope for her.
