Living with a children's author isn't as easy as it looks!

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

–Fred Rogers–

We think of helpers a lot during the Labor Day season. I mean, they’re around 24/7/365, but they are especially honored at this time of year. Plus lots of them have the day off to relax and recharge. And eat burgers.

Mom and I met a lot of the helpers Mr. Rogers talked about when our car floated away in the storm a couple of months ago. A nearby family invited us into their house to dry off and warm up, some teenagers pushed our soggy car out of the water, the police called for the tow truck to take the car to a safe place, our Uber driver took us home through the storm, and the insurance lady helped us figure out how to get a rental and then a new car. We appreciated all of them and lots more helpers in between.

I’m sure the Hurricane Dorian people down south will be finding the helpers today and for a bunch more days in the future. We are all, always ever-grateful for the helpers.

As a doggie, I appreciate helpers a lot. The vet

and people at Petco keep me happy and healthy with medicines, treats, toys, and neat nails on my paws.

The park and highway workers help me have fun adventures with Mom. And of course, Mom is a helper by holding the end of my leash to keep me safe from cars, big dogs, scary statues, and delicious poisons on the ground which I really want to eat.

Wait. What? Is that Teddy Roosevelt?? Please don’t make me walk near him.

As a writer, Mom appreciates helpers a lot, too. Everywhere she goes she hears, sees, and meets people and pets who give her ideas just by being their own original selves. Her critique group named LindaVijiLauriConnieKellyJenandOtherJen help her see what’s good and what needs work in her stories.

And of course, I am a helper by staring at her and giving my full support. She calls it “creeping her out.” That’s good… Right..?

  1. that is the best thing we can do… and the only way to survive social medias… with looking at the helpers. and we keep all people the pets and the wildlive in our thoughts who are in the path or dorian

    • Helpers are the best, P! And they’re EVERYWHERE! We are sure that they are staying nearby to the people dealing with Dorian.

      C

  2. I didn’t know that about your car! What a shame it didn’t have fins 🐠

  3. That’s good don’t worry 🙂
    What a great helper 🙂

  4. You were so lucky to have so many lovely people to help you. The Fairy sometimes cries when she sees how brave the emergency services are and how generous people are to strangers. People are not a bad lot really. You keep staring Cupcake. Maybe, if you stare hard enough, you can send a telepathic message about cake for tea!
    Monty and Chicken 🐾❤️🐾

    • Cake for tea sounds like just the thing, C and M. Or just cake. Or just tea. Or anything, really, even some extra kibbles once in a while. The fairy has a good and soft heart to care so much for the helpers. They surely are a special bunch.

      Love and licks,
      C

  5. Thank heavens there are “helpers” in this world right Cupcake? Without help, we MIGHT figure things out on our own but with help we KNOW we will be alright. We love your “cupcake dress”…..how cute and so perfect for the sweetest cupcake we know. Glad you and your Mom have help with everything and I am SURE that you are your Mom’s bestest (and cutest) helper!

    Love, Teddy

    • I do try to be Mom’s bestest helper, T. Besides staring, I also bring her toys, sit next to her, and lick her coffee cup when she’s finished with it. I mean – what else can she need from me!?

      Love and licks,
      C

  6. Hi C. Maybe when you creep her out she can look for more helpers. Xox Lucy and Xena

Cupcake, your dress is the perfect design and the perfect color for you. I love that cake too!
Ya know, to me every one of you bloggies are a start to a story. Every one. Today’s too. It’s a “specialty” story/blog in a manner of speaking, I realize but it needs to be used as a learning tool for kids. I meant abut helping and being a help. And Cupcake, thanks for being a friend to me about my suddenly turned traumatic vet visits. XXXX

    • You’re welcome, KI. I understand about unfounded fear. In my life, I have had issues with a fire extinguisher, ladders, balloons, box fans, a picture of Frankenstein, and a statue of Teddy Roosevelt. Fears come and go. Hopefully, yours will go soon. Paws crossed. Thanks for following our bloggie story. Mom does think in stories most of the time.

      Love and licks,

  8. You look pawsome in that hard hat, Cupcake. We’re big supporters of helpers and hope they bring us extra treats with their help.
    Your fur-iends,
    Sam & Elsa

  9. Very nicely said!

  10. So sorry to learn about your car problems! How scary! The Two Orange Pups like helpers, too, especially the park attendants who keep the walkways clear so we can take long walks with Mom.

    • Thanks, P. We also appreciate the park attendants and park and home lawn guys. They make everything clean and neat for us and Mom likes when they take away leaves and acorns because sometimes I need to sniff Every. Single. One.

      Love and licks,
      C

  11. We are all lucky to have such wonderful helpers in our lives, Cupcake! I’m sure your mom thinks you are the best helper of all! ❤

We love Mr. Rogers and have learned a lot from him. Cupcake, Extra good job staring at the imaginary whatchamacalits that are standing right behind your mom so she doesnt see them and get scared! You are an awesome helper. ~ nose nudges Bessie Pup

    • Thanks, B. Mom and I also LOVED Mr. Rogers. He was smart and sweet and caring. And nothing like the whatchamacallits behind Mom.

      Love and licks,
      C

  13. I am still shocked about you and your Mom and the car being taken away during a flood. You both were very brave and once again I want you to know how happy and thankful I am that you both are okay. You did have a lot of helpers that took care of you! You are right, there are lots of people doing good things to help us all. We are thankful. Very nice post, Cupcake.

    • Thanks, Pix. Mom and I WERE very brave – mostly because the helpers were there for us. When it’s your first time caught in a flood, it’s pretty confusing about what to do and when to do it. #gratefulforhelpers

      Love and licks,

  14. Helpers are literally life savers and so is your mom. If you think about it – and you don’t have to think too hard – if people would get busy helping each other and caring for each other, there’d be no time to be hurtful to one another. There just wouldn’t be enough time for it. I’m glad you met a lot of helpers. I wouldn’t want anything happening to you both. ❤️ I just wish I knew how to help your mom to get book 2 on the racks. 🤦🏼‍♀️

    • Thanks, G. We are 100% sure we’ll never get into that kind of a situation again. We were also worried that YOU would get into that kind of situation with the hurricane. We were very relieved that you got away safe and sound. I’m with you on the book situation. I’d love to unlock the secret of getting Book #2 on the racks. It’s really taking a long time!

I always offer to help my peeps fix dinner. But they never let me. I wonder why?

    • I cannot understand that either, C. You seem quite capable of chewing… I mean chopping, stealing… I mean slicing, and eating… I mean heating a meal. You’d be a perfect sous chef.

      Love and licks,
      C

  16. Oh, Cupcake, you are a great-staring-doggie, most grateful doggie and the best helper of all and I think you have the magic to bring the biggest smile from A to Z at Granny’s face….no, for sure 😸Pawkisses for a wonderful week ahead with lots of inspiration for your mom🐾😽💞

    • Thanks, Little B. bringing the biggest smiles is always my goal. Having magic is also my goal! Hope you’re having a wonderful week, too!

      Love and licks,
      C

  17. My heavens Cupcake and mom. ordeal would have been so scary. The helpers are fantastic and they do care. Up here winter is when the helpers seem to be ut most. What with peeps getting stuck or sliding in winter conditions.

I’ll bet you were and still are your mom’s biggest inspiration, C.

  18. Lulu: “Hmm … Creeping your mom out might be good helping, if she were writing scary Stephen King type stories. Maybe you can convince her to start doing that. Just keep staring!”

  19. I can’t imagine going through so much flood water or a major disaster! Glad you’re okay. Love the birthday suit and cake, Cupcake. I have a new dog living next door named Sugar.

    • Oh, yay, P. Sugar sounds like a sweetie! (See what I did there?) I think she will be the best neighbor ever! Give her a lick (or a hug) from me.

      Love and licks,
      C
