Living with a children's author isn't as easy as it looks!

Five Word Friday

Today’s five words come from Mom’s July first draft.

6. Napped – Napping is an important part of being the doggie of a writing mom. Whenever Mom is busy talking to herself… I mean writing something, I nap to kill time.

Whenever she wants to think, we take a walk so I can do napping in the street

or the gutter

and Mom can stand there like a jackass waiting and thinking and waiting and waiting.

22. Rolled – Things roll around in Mom’s head in a jumble of amazing ideas, failed attempts, useless thoughts, wasted effort, and enormous dreams.

My head works differently. There are no ideas, attempts, thoughts, efforts, or dreams. There’s just… well… pretty much nothing in there. All my rolling is done outside my head.

34. Garbage – There’s nothing I don’t love about garbage. It smells good, looks great, and on the luckiest of my lucky days – it tastes delicious. Mom puts yummy things into the garbage – like pizza crusts, stale cake, and watermelon rinds. Such a waste.

Sometimes, Mom writes garbage. Also, such a waste. But it’s part of the process.

7. Car – I love the car.

It takes me to all my favorite places

and a few of my less favorite places.

Last month when our old car floated away in a flood,

Still dripping after two days…

we had to get a new one.

It still takes me to all the fun and less fun places, but we’re going to try not to float away in this one.

5. Tougher – A few years ago, when I got my tail caught in the door,

Mom said, “You’re tougher than you look.” and “I could think of better ways to spend $2500.00.”

and “I’d write about this, but I don’t write HORROR STORIES!

  1. oh nooo… your car floated away? that is scary, but we are glad you got a new one, modern dogs have to be mobile, right? The mam has such ideas rolling around in her head too… sometimes she thinks her nut is like a dice shaker…

    • I’m pretty sure your mama’s head IS like a dice shaker. She is brimming with ideas great and small and shopping and DIY. She has no shortage of ideas to act on.

      Love and licks,

  2. I like to lay about too….hehehe,xx Speedy

  3. Cupcake! I didn’t know your car got a big bath! That’s awful……I’m sorry you had to wind up getting a new one – that one looked brand new. I think it’s very cool that you are also occasionally a “back-napper” like me though – I was happy to see that photo – we are back-nap twins.

    Hugs, Teddy

    • Teddy don’t you think we should mention the “wheels up” position to Cupcake and her Mom?

    • I love being “wheels-up” back-nap twins, T. Mom thinks that crazy combination of belly-up, bunny paws is the cutest. Our car was a lease, so going from new car to new car is normal. Having the car turn into a boat is NOT normal, though. Yikes.

      Love and licks,

  4. Rolling and garbage and especially napping are fun. That car thing? That doesn’t look like it was fun and I’d watch out for those watermelon rinds. Not good for dogs, I hear. But pizza?!?!? Oh yeah, man!!

    • I didn’t even know that about watermelon rinds – not that I have ever been lucky enough to get one. But thanks for the heads up. Pizza. Oh yeah!

      Love and licks,

Cupcake! Floated away? Oh man. How awful for your mom! Truthfully where mom and I are, it is the rainiest ever. If mom and I didn’t live on the highest point— 1100 ft elevation— of the town, we would be in serious trouble as they have been down in the town proper. Flooding is the one thing we have escaped. I am so sorry you guys went through that.

    • Thanks, KI. We live at the top of a hill, too, but we were driving down by the library where I was working when the flood came. It was scary, but we were very brave the whole time.

      Love and licks,

I like the word napped the best although I like soft cushy places the best. You do make roads and storm drains look comfy though. Yikes about the car floating away that’s not fun at all. ~nose nudges Bonnie Pup

    • Floating in the car was not fun, B. I went from being a doggie who won’t step in a puddle to a wet, muddy doggie being carried through hip-deep swamp water in the rain. Napping in my jammies when we finally got home was paws-down the BEST!

      Love and licks,

I bet napping in your jammies felt awesome! We’re glad you and your mom were ok. ~ Bonnie

  7. Wait! Your car floated in a flood and you had to get a new one. Who knew? New cars are fun but not when the old car looks so cool. But dripping is not good. That is a very cute picture of you in the car!

    • I remember when you got your tail caught in the door. So happy it made a good recovery. You were a brave girl.

      • Thanks, Pix. New cars are always fun – even when you get them “the hard way.” I WAS very brave when my tail broke off, and I was also very brave in the flood. I shivered, but that’s normal on a good day, so between being scared, tired, wet, and cold, shivering was in order.

        Love and licks,

  8. Oh no Cupcake, so sorry to hear about your flooded vehicle. Hope you are enjoying the new one even more than the old one. Mooshed tails are definitely a horror story and one no one wants to have happen to them.

    • Thanks, M. You know it! So far, the new car is lots of fun and has a nice beginning coating of my furs starting to build up on the carpet. #missionaccomplished

      Love and licks,

  9. Wow, it’s been a tough few weeks! I hope you’re all well, now. Just last night, my husband and I were thinking about all the European vacations we could have paid for with the money we’ve spent on veterinarians. We wouldn’t change a thing. Happy tail to you!

    • Thanks, K. My tail turned out nicely after all those months of cone-wearing craziness. Mom is determined never to do the math on the vet bills in our life. It’s money well-spent!

      Love and licks,

  10. GOSH! I’m so sorry about your car being in the floods! Terrible. And I’m so glad your tail is well now. As for naps BOOMER LOVES THEM!

  11. Can’t imagine what it’s like to helplessly watch your car float away. Floods everywhere! Cupcake, your comments are spot on as usual. Fun post!

    • Thanks, P. Actually, we didn’t watch the car float away. We floated away INSIDE IT! And yes. It was pretty unimaginable! But it all worked out for the best, thank God.

Sleeping (or napping) is our favorite sport at my house! Hooray for napping!

My ghostwriter always has a lot of ideas rolling around in her head. But by the time she gets to the computer, she’s forgotten them! Same thing when she stands in a doorway and says, “what did I come in here for???”

Garbage … you’ve pretty much got that covered! (from the doggie point of view)

Car … I’m not crazy about the car. One time Dad’s car slid down the driveway all by itself on a particularly icy winter day. It didn’t get damaged, though.

Tougher … that crazy little goldfinch who’s been bashing himself in the car mirrors is one tough little bugger! One of these days he’s going to bash himself clear though!

    • If the goldfinch doesn’t quit his crazy behavior, You and your ghostwriter may be getting a new car soon. Or at least a new mirror! Yikes! Hostile birdie. “What did I come in here for?” is a common question around here, too. #humansamiright

      Love and licks,

  13. Love your list cupcake. I am a big fan of napping myself too. And, oh man! Your car floated away?

    • Oh yeah, M.R. There’s no sleep like nap sleep. It’s the best. And who knew cars could float? Well for a little while, anyway. Then they start to leak! *gulp*

      Love and licks,

  14. OMC you need a boat, Cupcake, you can have mine that we needed in the garden two years ago…MOL…Rolling around is so you…and me…🤔have you tried rolling against the dustbin, Cupcake…😺 Pawkisses for a Happy Weekend to the both of you🐾😽💞

  15. Lulu: “I love napping too, and rolling! Both in things, and over on my back to get a belly rub!”
Charlee: “What about the car, or the garbage?”
Lulu: “I haven’t decided on the car, and I haven’t gotten into the garbage yet.”
Chaplin: “What are you waiting for?! Dump that trash and let’s see what’s in it!”

    • I’m with C, Lu. Get into that trash immediately! You are tall enough, unless your parents “take measures” against your success. I swear – there’s pizza in there!!

      Love and licks,

  16. I always admire your street napping Cupcake, but I hope you didn’t try it in that flood. How scary! I hope your food dish didn’t float away.
    Monty and Chicken 🐾❤️🐾

    • Thanks, M and C. In the flood, I was shivering too much to nap. It was a little too close to bath day for my tastes. My treats and snacks were safe in Mom’s pocket, but my favorite doggie water bottle floated away. Thank goodness the tow truck man rescued it and gave it back to Mom a couple of days later.

      Love and licks,

  17. This is a funny post. Especially napping in the gutter. 🙂
