Living with a children's author isn't as easy as it looks!

Worst and Best fascinate me. Sometimes just when I think I’m being the Best Girl, I discover to my shock and surprise that I am not.

Best Girl helping with laundry

Best Girl looking at Mom

Best Girl not taking a street nap in the dumpster slime

Best Girl getting her exercise

People say all writers have an inner critic telling them their work stinks, they’re wasting their time, nothing they do is  good enough, and they’re straight-up frauds. I don’t have one of those critics in my head. Neither does Mom. I think I learned it from her! When she reads over one of her stories, she’s all, “SO CUTE!” and “I love this thing.” and “Quit staring at me when I’m eating.”

I’m not staring at you. You’re staring at me.

Mom relies on her critique group and RYS and agents and editors to tell her she may not be quite the best. Sometimes, they say nothing. #’nuffsaid. Sometimes they say, “Not what we’re looking for.” or “Fix this. Change that. What about this?”

I rely on Mom to tell me I may not be quite the best.

“Stay away from the edge.”

“Get off the bed.”

  1. You even make a prison uniform look cute, Cupcake! You’re definitely one of the best at cuteness!

  2. that is the howl-o-ween costume for us! (said the mama) we like that you and your mom love what you do and that you give your oeuvre a good rating . that is impawtant and it brings the courage to show it to others … although some doggie-oeuvres should rather stay secret to avoid sh*tstorms…

    • Thanks, P. For sure Mom’s work is out there. While she is saying it’s cute, others might be saying, “Are you serious?” We love sharing it anyway!

      Love and licks,

  3. Oh Cupcake you ARE the best…..I think you make a wonderful muse for your very talented Mom with her stories – those eyes of yours say “Mom, you rock your writing!”……and every writer needs that kind of encouragement!!

    Hugs, Teddy

    • Thanks, T. I do try and be a muse for Mom. And I do try and NEVER take my eyes off her. She thinks it’s kinda creepy.

      Love and licks,

  4. We think you’re the BEST, Cupcake, and we know Mom thinks so, too! And with you by her side, Mom’s writing is sure to be the best, too!

    • Thanks, PT. We love that encouragement. Whenever Mom’s work is the best of the best, the elusive book 2 will become a real thing…

      Love and licks,

  5. But do you ever give your Mom feedback on if she is the best, Cupcake? You two make a good team.

  6. The “best” is a very hard place to be as someone will always knock you out of that position. However, we should try and keep in that position for as long as we can.

    • Wise words, T. Mom only needs to be The Best long enough for somebody to want to publish one of her stories. After that it’ll be on her to stay there.

      Love and licks,

  7. You and your mom are both the BEST, Cupcake! There’s no worst about it! 🙂 ❤

    • Thanks, S. Being The Worst would be the worst, and there’s nothing worse than that. Ouch. Now I gave myself a headache.

      Love and licks,

  8. I bet all your Mom’s stories are awesome! Even if those others offer suggestions for changes.

  9. Your great Halloween costume is just wonderful. Makes us really wanting Halloween to come faster with the costume contest we are having for the little ones here. Love the photo of you taking your nap, but at least you were away from the slime. Thanks for the wonderful share. Have a great day.

    • Thanks, World of A. Mom hates Halloween (except for the part where she dresses me up to look ridiculous). She blames it on teaching 8 year olds for 35 years. If that doesn’t make a person hate Halloween – nothing will!

      Love and licks,

  10. I agree! We should be gentle with ourselves, because no one else is.

  11. Is your mom a helicopter parent? I see you hiding like Archie does.

    • Archie has the right idea. Sometimes parents are TOO MUCH. Mom makes helicopter parents look relaxed and freewheeling.

      Love and licks,

  12. I think you’re the best girl in every situation, Cupcake, and with you on your mom’s side, there can’t be any worst pawt 😀 Great quote! Pawkisses for a Happy Weekend 🐾😽💞

  13. I knew when I was reading this that you and mom have no ‘negative waves’ in your heads. So I knew the next best thing is to have external critics, otherwise you’ll not know where to improve. Makes sense. Good thing you’re both open to constructive criticism. But I still don’t get why Book #2 hasn’t happened yet. And # 3 and # 4 and – well you get my drift – cause ain’t nobody more critical than me 😉 and I LOVE mom’s writing. Again I say: #whatswrongwithpeople. ????
    Keep up the good work.

I am so looking forward to learning a new book is coming out. And Cupcake, you can and do help with ideas and twists of story I know. Making your mom pay attention..well…that stare you are always giving her is hammering home your ideas and suggestions. She’s just not answering the phone so to speak. Right? XXXX Love you bunches!

    • I wish Mom would learn to “answer that phone.” I’ve got ALL the ideas! Once I had an idea to look closely at a sticker bush. I had stickers in my head furs and all over my sweater. Mom said I should use my head. I thought that’s what I WAS doing….

      Love and licks,

  15. Oh Cupcake, you constantly make me smile with your ‘good’ behavior.

  16. hello cupcake its dennis the vizsla dog hay it luks to me like yoo ar the best at all those things i meen yoo hav alreddy put away all the lawndry and yoo hav alreddy finishd eksersizing befor evrywun els has eeven started and yoo sertinly seem to be the best at staring and napping and beeing on the bed!!! i see no problems heer!!! ok bye

    • You totally “get me,” D. I AM doing it all right. Mom is too critical of my efforts. She should be more critical of her own efforts!

      Love and licks,

  17. Ha little sweet Cupcake, to us you will always be the BEST!!!! Xoxoxox Johanna and Charley

  18. What would you do without Mom to keep you on the right path? I sometimes find I can critique my own work if I let it sit for a week or so. I come back and everything sounds wrong. 🙂

  19. Best book buddy ever
