Last week, Mom had an opportunity to submit a story to an editor Above the Slushpile. That means her work wouldn’t be buried under everybody else’s as much as usual. It’s nice to have a story rise up there and be seen, but even then, it has to shine on its own.
Paws crossed that this one is shiny!
Today’s five words come from that story…
11. Boy – Lots of times, when I am working at the VA, the old soldiers say to Mom, “Look at this guy.” and “What’s his name?” They actually think I’m a boy! I need to always wear a sundress with 3 layers of ruffles to make sure they realize that I’m a girl.
16. Cake – I love cake. Sometimes, I have to fight with Mom to get her to share. If the cake is chocolate, the deal is off,

Bummer!
but sometimes, I’m allowed to jump in
and grab some whipped cream.

Oh yeah!
86. Book – Mom reads picture books like crazy – piles and piles of them – usually 200 a year. It’s a good way to make her writing better, to see what’s out there, and to pass the time while she tries to write and sell the elusive Book #2.
91. Nibble – I think nibbling is for amateurs. I don’t nibble. I gobble. After Mom writes a story, she hides it from herself for a while to let it rest. Then she nibbles at it – adding things, taking things away, and changing things around. Picture books need to make room for the illustrations to help tell the story. More nibbling. Or gobbling.

M-m-m-m… Tiny pancake. Nom. Nom. Nom.
65. Messy – First drafts can be messy. They’re supposed to be messy. Messy and stupid and even embarrassing, sometimes. If I get messy, Mom sticks me in the bathtub and scrubs me clean and puts conditioner on me and dries me with towels. #itshorrific

I’m keeping my paws crossed about your mom’s book!
People mostly assume I’m a boy even though I have my built-in eye makeup. Maybe I need some dresses like yours – I wonder if they come in my size?
I think you have such a girly face, C. Dresses can’t hurt, though. Maybe I need some eye makeup!
Love and licks,
C
that is a good news when a story will not rest forever and ever between other stories… like it happened nearly with the stories of j.k. rowling… imagine a world without Hairy Potter or without the story of your mom….impawsible, right?
For sure, P. Mom says, “Ya gotta be in it to win it.” Now she’s in it and not buried in the slush. To be like J.K. would be a dream come true!
Love and licks,
C
My Cupcake has her paws crossed for your story too! 🙂
Yay! Thanks, R and Other C.
Love and licks,
C
So you’re a fan of cake huh? YUM….especially with whipped cream! I can’t imagine anyone thinking you were a boy instead of a girl – I think people just automatically think “boy dog” when they see a dog. Crazy huh? Dresses will help with that of course but I think you have very girlie eyes – Angel Sammy said so and he was right!!! So there! We are hoping your Mom’s second book gets snapped up SOON.
Love, Teddy
Thanks, T. I agree with you. Although I am a girl, even Mom usually calls new, strange dog friends, “He.” I guess it’s a dog thing….
Love and licks,
C
Paws crossed for your Mom’s story, Cupcake. And we hope you get more whipped cream to nibble.
Thanks, PT. Whipped cream is my new favorite food. Thank goodness it’s one of Mom’s faves too!
Love and licks,
C
#itshorrific from Lucy and Xena too. We hope your Mom’s book gets published.
I get my face and beard washed 87 times a week and people always think I’m a boy. And why do you get cake and whipped cream and I don’t? ~Xerna
How is it possible, X? No cream? That’s a travesty. If there’s no whipped cream at your house, maybe your mama can take you to Starbucks for a Pupachino. #creaminacup
Love and licks,
C
Mommy said that’s not in my diet plan. But she will give me some more raw meat and veggies.
Mom and I hope everything turns out very well for your Mom, Cupcake!
Boomer
Thanks, B. We’re keeping hopes up and paws crossed.
Love and licks,
C
Cupcake…hugs to you and your mom and both our best fishes to her on her new book. I have my paws crossed too and mom said she is crossing her eyes..er, fingers. That cake…OH My WORD! ALL of it looked great! That first one looked like Boston Cream Pie. *drool drool drool*
Good eye, KI. That WAS Boston cream pie. One of Mom’s (many) favorite cakes. She’s never met a cake she didn’t love. Neither have I! Thanks to you and your mama for crossing things. Good luck is welcome here…
Love and licks,
C
Your mom sure works at getting her books out there and seen. We have crossed paws for your mom and book #2.
B S and T
Thanks, B, S, and T. Mom knows that nothing gets published if it sits there inside her computer. #nuthintolose
Love and licks,
C
Keep those paws crossed. That second book is right around the corner. Have some cake while you’re waiting. 🍰📚🤞🏼🐾❤️
Right around the corner? Yay! Thanks, G. And yes – eating (or begging for) cake is a great way to pass the time while we wait. It sure does make the waiting more pleasant…
Love and licks,
C
Good luck on your new submission. I’ll keep my paws crossed too.
I’m glad you got a taste of that of cake and whipped cream. Yummy! Today I only got some cauliflower and one little piece of bratwurst from my ghostwriter’s plate. Oh, and a little piece of a cookie. I guess I should be happy with that!
Thanks, C. I have never had a taste of bratwurst OR cauliflower. I think I’m missing the boat, here. They both sound yummy.
Love and licks,
C
Prayers and crossed paws that your mom’s book is sparkly and shiny and gets lots of attention. Nibbles, whipped cream, and books are all very good things. Baths, um not so much. ~ nose nudges Belle Pup
Thanks, B. I’m sure you girls know all about baths. They are never fun. Mom lures me in every time with a trail of cookies. Why do I keep falling for it. #nowillpower
Love and licks,
C
Yeah, but it’s cookies…! ~nose nudges Belle
We hope your mom gets great news about her book. Your cake looks scrumptious!
Thanks, MK. We are hoping the same like crazy! The cake tastes as good as it looks.
Love and licks,
C
We love your 5 words and think they’ll be a winner on your mum’s submission. Best of luck. Sam is jealous your mum shares her cake-I’m stingy.
Thanks, M. No sharing!?? That is cold. Cake is so yummy.
Love and licks,
C
Cake IS yummy which is why it’s hard to share 😉
Archie has his paws crossed too for your mom. Boy does she spoil you — couldn’t believe the picture of you licking that cake. Archie wouldn’t dare try — lucky he can’t jump up onto chairs anymore. Great photos!
Ha! Thanks, P. Mom picked me up and put me on that high counter stool for my cake. That said, she won’t eat the part where I lick it, so she cuts it off and eats the clean part herself. She says she loves me and all, but NOT THAT MUCH!
Love and licks,
C
hello cupcake its dennis the vizsla dog hay above the slush pile is a gud playse to be i think it is cold in the slush pile rite??? oh and nibbling and gobbling both sownd gud to me!!! ha ha ok bye
Well, D. After seeing you eating that tomato off the vine, I’m guessing you’re more of a gobbler like me. Nuthin’ I don’t love about that! OK. Bye.
Love and licks,
C
I tried to contact the local VA about doing a Therapy Dog visit. They were not very receptive, and the woman I spoke with said they didn’t even line Service dogs in the building. Did you have a difficult time starting to do visits at your VA?
Our VA was already set up when we started going there. In fact, Mom and I were trained there, so it was pretty easy to get on board. We visit once a month. Other teams visit weekly. I guess it’s up to the individual volunteer coordinator to make the call.
Love and licks,
C
It’s too bad you can’t have chocolate. It’s so good. When I was a teenager I had a Doberman, Tasha, who got a piece of everything I would eat, including chocolate. Back then I didn’t know it was bad for dogs. Fortunately, Tasha never got sick from it.
Lucky Tasha! Mom remembers her childhood dogs eating chocolate, too. Back then nobody knew any better. She never brushed her dogs’ teeth either. She brushes mine EVERY SINGLE DAY! Ugh.
Love and licks,
C
We never brushed Tasha’s teeth either. She barely got nails trimmed too. She was very, very resistant to nail trimming and when a doberman insists that you leave her nails alone, well…
Mommy found something about form letters of rejections etc that would surely make your mom laugh! It’s from a pair magazine. Not sure how to get it to you but I know you’d love it.
Once Mom saw a bunch of rejection letters that were sent to REALLY famous writers. It made her feel better in a way. #rejectionhappens
Love and licks,
C
PAPER magazine. Spell correct! YOU ARE FIRED!
Spell check stinks!
Indy’s crossing his paws too, Cupcake. Keep writing!
Thanks, T. Indy, too!
Love and licks,
C
All my paws are crossed for your mom, sweet Cupcake. It’s great to see that you were able to get yourself some cream of the cake and than a little pancake as desert…what else do we want, right…MOL 😀 Pawkisses for a Happy Week ahead🐾😽💞
Thanks, Little B. Treats come in all shapes and sizes and I am determined to try them ALL!
Love and licks,
C
mmmm whip cream. Let’s repeat that one again sweet one. XOXO – Bacon
You are feeling me, B. Cream is THE BEST!
Love and licks,
C
Well for heaven’s sake. Mom has read your post but never commented. How rude of her! She gets side tracked easily. Something like Tyebe but Tyebe has an excuse, mom doesn’t. I liked to see you with all that food C.
I was shocked to see you in the bathroom though, all nekked and unhappy! Budd said he’d help a lady like you out of the tub anyday.
Shoko
Thanks, S. Budd, too! Bath time is the worst. All that scrubbing and soaping and conditioner and WATER!! Ugh. And afterwards, I smell so sweet. It’s just not normal!
Love and licks,
C
