Hidden

Sometimes, when Mom writes a story, it’s not the story she meant to write. When stories jump from her head to her hands to her computer, bad things can happen.

The stories can go on and on and on. And on. The plot can go off track. The focus can go away…

… and then come back again.

And then go away again.

Remember this...?

Remember this…?

The story from Mom’s brain might be in there somewhere, but it’s hidden. When Mom gets to the end, she says, “It’s twice as long as it should be.” and “This sounded better in my head.” and “Where’s your other boot?”

missing boot

It snowed last weekend in my neighborhood. EVERYTHING was hidden under 28 inches of that cold, white stuff. I was hidden under the hood of my pink parka.

Who turned out the lights?

My beautiful paws were hidden in boots to protect them from cold. And rock salt.

boots are killing me

A sofa near the dumpster was hidden under a snow drift.

After a couple of days, I found some grass that was hidden near a disconnected snowplow that was hidden behind a building.

plow

A long time ago, I found a soggy potato chip bag hidden under the snow. So far, try as I might, I haven’t found any buried food.

looking in snow

Maybe when Mom is finished searching for the elusive, amazing story from her head, we’ll take a walk and see if there’s an elusive, amazing McDonald’s wrapper hidden under the snow. Or maybe I’ll just rest for a little while…

  1. good idea boots mom!

  2. Me and Nellie can not imagine so much snow in all our maremmas lives.

  3. Just love your boots. Will have to ask my Mum to get me a set. – Nose rubs from Benji

  4. Such a hard life, Cupcake! You should really move to New York. Not until I got a dog did I ever realize how many people eat chicken in the street. And it’s not hidden under a pile of snow. Genevieve, good luck w/your story. p.s. Cupcake, you may also want to talk to your local Jack Russell rep about the booties. The English Cocker Spaniel union has strictly forbidden them.

    • Thanks, R. Nothing is off limits around here. Mom is free-wheeling with the outfits. Chicken bones would be an AMAZING find. I need to get into the city!

We love your boots Cupcake – so very trendy!
Luv Hannah and Lucy xx xx

  6. Well Cupcake life (and writing) is full of endless possibilities…….with some surprises along the way like hidden food (!) but one thing for sure is that you are the cutest cupcake in the entire universe!

    Love, Sammy

  7. Those are such great boots that you are wearing Cupcake. Bet they keep your little paws nice and warm. Looks like you enjoyed the snow and the little places that didn’t have a lot of snow. You all have a great day.

    • Thanks, M. The boots do keep my feet warm and safe from salt and burning snow-removal chemicals. Plus, I’m pretty use Mom enjoys chasing me all over the house trying to get them on my paws.

      Love and licks,
      C

  8. yes, that’s always a surprise when we look on the word counter after typing the last dot. And sometimes the plot is hidden under a torrent of word-snow…. and the wild thing is, my momma always sees that fact AFTER pressing the publish button :o)

I understand I hear Momwithoutpaws saying “That is not where I thought this story was going” She has fun writing her books and poems

    • I think the story running away on its own is part of the fun of writing, F. I’m glad my mom isn’t the only one struggling with that!

      Love and licks,
      C

  10. I hope you find something interesting under the snow, Cupcake!

I think your mom’s boooks will end up more interesting because she listens to the characters in them.

  11. Oh dear! Three ‘o’s in books – it’s hard to type with paws this size!

  12. I am sure mom has lots of lovely stories in her head…take a deep breath and let them come out!! Charley admires your bravery for walking on boots…she cannot do it but she loves wearing a coat and she keeps on begging for a furlined one like yours. Stay nice and warm in all that snow xoxoxo

    • Thanks, J. Charley is smart not to get involved with the boots. I wish I had thought to just say no. I think she would look amazing in a fur-lined coat! Plus she’d be toasty warm.

      Love and licks,
      C

  13. The booties are too awesome!

  14. Cupcake, I hope you’re throwing a party for your mom today. Happy Birthday, Genevieve. 🍰

  15. Yes, Happy Birthday to your mom! Your four red boots are stylish. Know that feeling your mother has in her head when she pursues an story idea and it’s a bit illusive.

  16. I remember that net was asking for it!

Just a FEW more examples of how our PEEPS lack FOCUS… What would the world be like if WE were like that? There would not be a single HOLE Properly Dug. 87 bazillion Squirrels left UN CHASED … and Smells left UN ROLLED on…
The PEEPS need to learn to FOCUS like WE do… they have the attention span of a gnat.

With YOU out looking for things I KNOW just the right story will flutter into your mom’s mind, take root and bloom!

  19. I hope that the warm “springish” sunshine helps your Mom uncover some of her hidden ideas and stories, Cupcake, and that you find some treasures as the snow piles shrink.

    • Thanks, P. We both continue in the search! Lots of snow melted today in my neighborhood. I’m not sure about Mom’s head, though….

      Love and licks,
      C

  20. You be careful out there, Cupcake! That snow is deeper than you are tall. (Hey, you look good in pink!) Boomer

    Linda

    • Thanks, B. Pink is my favorite color. And YES – the snow was about a foot higher than me! Thank goodness for the snow blower guys!

      Love and licks,
      C

  21. The story maybe hidden just like that bag of potato chips was. But that tale will soon surface, just like that chip bag did, I’m sure. And peek-a-boo under that hood!

    • Thanks for the encouragement, G. Things are melting like crazy, so I’m hopeful that in Mom’s head and in my neighborhood, something amazing turns up soon!

      Love and licks,
      C

  22. your snow coat is glam! And I bet you can find lots of stuff under that snow

  23. We love how you and your Mom tell your stories. I bet you’ll find that red boot when all that snow melts!

    • You’re right, L. We already found it back behind the building. Jackpot! Still no filthy, snow-covered food, though. But I’ll keep searching.

      Love and licks,
      C

Wowser, your turf be looking like my turf with snow tunnels and all but mine be melting furry fast. Now we has mud tunnels and mom gets all like “EWWWWW don’t come inside with those muddy paws!” Such a pawty pooper she is. (Those words could stay in her head, BOL!)

  25. You look very well dressed for the weather. Stay warm!

  26. Happy Birthday to your mom Cupcake…sorry I’m late but my mom is so slow getting to her favourite blogs. Hope yesterday was a fun day for both of you. We loved the post. What a great way to show hidden things using the snow. Clever Cupcake.

    Shoko

    • Thanks, S. Moms get busy doing lots of human things. They do not have the ability to prioritize like we doggies do!

      Love and licks,
      C

  27. I can’t believe you haven’t ever found food under that snow, Cupcake. That seems like the perfect place for some tasty little morsel. 🙂

    • From your lips to God’s ears, Miss HL. I’ll keep searching…. There’s a great meltdown, so I’m hopeful.

      Love and licks,
      C

  28. And sometimes the story that comes out is better than the one that is in your head. And where is your other boot?

    • The missing boot was located back by the dumpster, J. Apparently, flipping them off my feet one by one won’t work. Plus they come in packages of 12! The boots are here to stay…

      Love and licks,
      C

  29. That’s a lot of snow! 😀

  30. Hi Cupcake,

It’s Mommy’s girls, Mona, Prissy and Sammie Jean. We just found you and love your bloggie. Can we be friends?

  31. Your widdle toes must be toasty warm in the snappy looking red boots. I personally love the tummy photo the best. I can’t resist rubbing soft tummies and yours looks really soft. I’m impressed by your mom being able to take stuff from her imagination and make it into a book. That’s awesome!

    • Thanks, Boomdee. My boots did keep my feet warm and safe in the snowstorm and the aftermath. Ugh. Why did I say math…? Now I’ve gone and given myself a math headache.

      Love and licks,
      C

  32. MOL..that is a great way of showing how everything gets in and out the head, Cupcake 😀 You always make us laugh! Warm Pawkisses to melt the snow 🙂 ❤ ❤

  33. You look adorable in your winter gear! My family tried putting two different kinds of boots on me, but I always kick them off. Now I have to deal with them blow-drying ice balls off my feet, legs and from between my paw pads. I’m not sure which is worse!

  34. Yes, thoughts hide in the darnest places, Cuppy. Mom’s brain must be full of snow.
