Living with a children's author isn't as easy as it looks!

Countdown Wednesday

123

It’s back to school time around here. For 52 years of her life, Mom went back to school in September – sometimes as a student and sometimes as a teacher. Today we’re counting down about back to school.

My Back to School Countdown

3. Sleep – A good night’s sleep will make a better learner.

night night

So does a good morning’s sleep and a good afternoon’s sleep

raccoon nap

and a good floor sleep and a good street sleep.

I must be the best learner in the world!

2. Friends – When school starts I get to see lots of friends at the library. I am well-behaved and don’t knock over any chairs or bump any tables. I don’t lick the books or the kids’ shoes while they’re reading to me. …Actually I do all of those things, but just a little bit.

1. School Visits – Once in while, one of Mom’s teacher friends tells her to bring me to school to play with the kids for a while. That is my dream come true.

3. School Visits – Mom loves visiting kids at school to show her PowerPoint, talk about being an author, and read her books to them. She says it’s the best part of being an author. Bar none.

2. Friends – Now that she’s not a teacher anymore, Mom and a few of her retired teacher friends go out to breakfast on the first day of school and enjoy drinking lots of coffee and talking instead of working.

1. Fear – Mom had a raging case of school phobia when she was in kindergarten. She cried and begged her mother every single day to let her stay home – not for the first few days, but EVERY SINGLE DAY from the first day of school in September till the last day of school in June. That might explain why she writes about being afraid so often. She has a million stories about fear in her computer. It’s apparently her favorite topic.

Luckily, I am much more courageous than she was….

Uh-oh! Pumpkin demons...

Uh-oh! Pumpkin demons… Help me.

GAH! It’s the deadly balloon of doom. *gulp*

  1. Cupcake that was the best back to school day ever… for you and for all that kids. If a school year starts with a fourlegged visitor it must be a good one, right? My mom had that kind of phobia in Kindergarten too. Her mom refused to let her stay at home and it was a great drama efurry morning. Suddenly the drama-queen stopped their daily performances… a miracle.. well not really… after her mom rought her to Kindergarten, her granny came to the back door and went back home with her (what a relief for the staff of the Kindergarten).

  2. My Mom was fine with school except for the very first day….she’d always be VERY nervous and usually she’d lose her lunch (if you know what I mean) and then after Day One she’d be fine. I think you look adorable in your little dresses and I know you make all the kids AND teacher smile when you visit the school with your Mom. If you can make just one person smile every day, you’ve done a WONDERFUL thing!

    Hugs, Sammy

  3. cupcake momwithoutpaws and I are jealous the principle said no dogs allowed, so we cannot go do what you are doing, it is just elders for us. woof

  4. kids are so lucky that you come visit them. And you are so lucky Cupcake to get to go see the kids. That would be especially good for the kids are a little afraid. We do think you are very cute Cupcake. You all have a great week.

  5. It looks like you and mom are having lots of fun Cupcake! I bet all the kids love you lots. Great shots of you as well. I love the sleeping part. We all need enough sleep … and playtime. 😀 Enjoy! ♥

  6. Sleep is good for the body, Cupcake! Breakfast, lunch, or dinner with friends is always a good thing! I love breakfast for dinner. I must check your Mom’s tag for fear, I have always had a bit of that and maybe I could learn a thing or two… 🙂 Love the picture of the kids all intent on what your Mom is saying!

  7. My mom wouldn’t let me sleep on the street either. I thought I could get out of going to school that way, but no such luck.

    • It seems there’s no escaping school. Even when I used to be carsick, Mom still took me to obedience school. She just drove really fast to try and beat my iffy tummy.

      Love and licks,
      C

  8. Cupcake you are the bestest for showing how to prepare for back to school. And you look so adorable in your dress – I think I’m in ❤ XOXO – Bacon

  9. Enjoy the school year, adorable Cupcake. And tell your mom breakfast with the peeps shouldn’t be limited to just the first day. 😉

  10. Cupcake my friend, if I have told you once I have told you twice, DO NOT SLEEP IN THE STREET. It is hazardous to your health. P.S. Good job as a therapy dog!

    • Thanks for the reminder, L. I need to get in as many street naps as I can before the winter. I love that hot asphalt. Once winter comes, I only want to stay inside.

      Love and licks,
      C

  11. How awesome that you get to visit school too. I bet the kids were thrilled!

  12. We’re kinda glad we don’t go to school. We don’t like getting up early in the morning. 😉 Have fun, Cupcake!

  13. Mom didn’t like kindergarten. She would go to kindergarten at least to the door or near the door and then walk over to a family friends. Mom would then have cookies and milk. What mom didn’t realize is that her mom knew all about it and would phone and check to make sure mom was there. MOL

  14. We like sleeping too…so that must make us excellent learners too!! You learn something new everyday!
Our mom didn’t mind going to school…BUTT at the end of 1st grade she dug her heels in, she couldn’t understand that she had to go back for another year because according to here, she’d learned everything she needed to! BOL!!!!! Our Oumie LOVES telling people that story, especially since mom went on to be a teacher too.

    BIG licks,
    Wally & Sammy

  15. Cupcake, I am preparing myself for learning too..the whole day and night, just like you 😀 Your face shows that you love the kids and teacher. Your poor mom, but in the end it turned out surprisingly…. purrfect 🙂
Thank you again for your support on our moving bloggie. That really meant a lot to us. Extra Pawkisses for a Happy Day 🙂 ❤

  16. School is the LAST place anyone should be afraid of. Unless you’re a Cupcake. I hear the students AND the teachers love cupcakes! Be safe and watch out for those crazy pumpkin monsters. Now those you should be afraid of. 🎃😳 🐶❤️

    • Thanks, G. I’ve heard that cupcakes are pretty popular at school. Ditto munchkins. Ditto pumpkin-freak-heads! I am the favorite Cupcake of all, when I show up, though…

      Love and licks,
      C

  17. Bet you are happy to be back in the classroom visiting kids. You do such important work!

  18. Cupcake, you keep getting cuter and sweeter everyday. Your mom is blessed to have you. 🙂

  19. Cupcake, McKinley agrees with you about all the ways to get some sleep except the street sleep. 🙂

  20. Reblogged this on Meghan aka FireBonnet Lite and commented:
    Love Cupcake Speaks!

  21. Sounds like a fabulous school day cupcake 😊

  22. OK Cupcake! I will come on over and see how I like the collar and leash. But you DO know that all cats lose their bones when a leash and harness is put on them I trust? But your mom may know how to prevent that happening. xxoo You look sweet smiling in your sleep.

  23. whoops, this is Katie Isabella.

    • Ha! Yay, KI! If you melt when the leash is on, Mom is used to that. Most likely, she will drag you like a bag of garbage. That’s what she does to me when I’m taking a street nap and a car comes. She says it’s for my own good and if I don’t want to be dragged, I should get up. Don’t ya love when parents think they’re in charge? It’s adorable….

      Love and licks,
      C

  24. You are just adorable when you are sleeping!! I’m glad you get chances to go to school too, I know you love interacting with the kids!

Luv Hannah and Lucy xx xx

  26. With all that sleeping you must be a star pupil 🙂

  27. Lol the picture of you getting a good street sleep is too cute! You definitely must be a great learner! Your posts always make me smile! 🙂

  28. You are the best student EVER!

  29. LOL, you make me laugh. “pumpkin demons and balloons of doom”….is mom exaggerating a wee bit? This post was a gas. I loved all your sleepy pictures too. You really get a lot of great rest! I like that you kind of match the sheets too. They’re polka-dotted and you have spots, that makes me giggle even more. Oh Cupcake, you are A-dorable. Retirement is the life isn’t it? xo B

    • Mom and I love retirement, for sure, Boomdee. I can’t imagine if she had to go to work every day without me. I don’t even like when she leaves me home to take out the garbage! Gah!

      Love and licks,
      C

  30. Your comment about Donkey dialing 911 with that stylus had mom laughing so much she was an embarrassment to me…or would have been had anyone been here.

  31. Pawesome day Cupcake! Nap away tooowoowooooo! Ku

  32. It’s no wonder dogs are such good learners if sleep is helpful!

  33. I’m sure you brighten up the day for the children when they let you go to school, Cupcake.

  34. Awake or asleep, you are always the most cute and pretty dog!! Wow, and from very fearful little girl to awesome teacher…how about that! Mom really understand very well why children can be so afraid, that makes her so good at teaching and writing! xo Johanna

  35. You are such a good dog, Cupcake! I also did not enjoy my 1st year of school and cried every single morning.

    • Thanks, Z. School can be scary! At one school I visited, I was afraid of the playground. Mom had to carry me past.

      Love and licks,
      C

  36. […] Kids – Kids can be great communicators. When Mom visited a couple of schools  this month, kids talked to her a lot. Sometimes they asked questions like, “How long does it […]
