Living with a children's author isn't as easy as it looks!

It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.

Leonardo DaVinci

I would love to be a doggie who “happened to things.” But unfortunately, most of the time, things happen to me. I blame this on my leash. One of Mom’s friends pointed out that in every single picture of me – there’s the leash. How can I make things happen when I’m tethered to Mom all the time?

This is an issue in some of Mom’s stories, too. Her characters are sometimes called “slight” because they aren’t doing enough. Things are happening to them, instead of them happening to things like Leonardo said. Mom has to look for this slightness every single time she works on a story. When she spots it, she has to fix it up to make the story more meaty and less slight.

Did somebody say "meaty?"

Did somebody say “meaty?”

Mom says, “It’s easy enough to spot this problem.”

  1. that leonardo was a wise man… maybe it is better to have a hole in the back yard than a hole in a story…. it’s easy to fix the hole in the ground, but we need our thinking cap when we have to fix a hole in a story ;o)

    • You’re so smart, E. Leonardo’s got nothing on you. I think fixing garden holes is just as easy as digging them!

      Love and licks,
      C

  2. Leashes! BLUGH! All they do is hold us back from reaching our full potential. We should start a movement Cupcake, are you in?
    Wally & Sammy

  3. I spend a lot of time on the leash, Cupcake. I prefer to think of it as keeping my biped attached to me. They wander off if you’re not careful!

    • You’re right, C. Mom has no sense of direction at all. I don’t know where she’d end up without me in the lead.

      Love and licks,
      C

  4. Oh Cupcake! First of all what a SWEEEEET picture of you with your patriotic shirt on! Love that look in your eyes little girl……adorables x 2 ! Secondly, leashes are a necessary evil. Yep – I’m afraid so. They are like our Moms having extra long arms to keep us safe. I used to hate my leash but then I realized it was only there because Mom loves me and wants me to be SAFE so I relaxed……..not quite relaxed enough to take a street nap but maybe one of these day I will!

    Love, Sammy

    • I never thought of it like that, S. Long leash arms! Maybe I’ll try cuddling with my leash and see how that works out.

      Love and licks,
      C

  5. Cupcake, as always, you have much wisdom. Genevieve, good luck w/the writing.

  7. Leonardo is quite the fellow who knew a thing or two! Charley does not understand that leash too because no matter how long it is…there is always something interesting to sniff at, 30 cm further. We love your new cupcake sweater…how cool is that! xoxoxoxoxox Charley and Johanna

    • I have also noticed the same phenomenon as Charley. How is it that everything delicious-smelling is just out of reach?? Mystery…

      Love and licks,
      C

Ya know, I swear every time I see you dressed, I always think you can’t get any cuter but this outfit rocks for certain! Mom wishes she could get ME on a leash and me not be boneless.

    • You would be adorable on a leash, KI. But I’m pretty sure boneless would NOT be a good look for you. I speak from boneless experience.

      Love and licks,
      C

  9. OMGosh, would you look at that ! You’re just cuter and cuter in every photo. I snorted about your street nap again, that just cracks me up. I also like the one with your bummie and tail sticking out of the planter. I think your mom must have been amused too since see took a photo even if she was saying “no, no Cupcake”…..LOL. You two are so fun!

    • Thanks, Boomdee. Mom and I do have our share of fun. And she’s an expert at taking embarrassing pictures of me – especially when I’m in trouble.

      Love and licks,
      C

  10. I’m loving your ‘meaty’ photo, do you think Mom is keeping you tethered so she can be cool by association…just saying 🙂

  11. It’s a tough life on the leash – but at least you are safe on it!

And this is one of my problems with writing as well!

    • You know what we’re facing here, S. Writers have to solve bigger problems in a bigger way. Mom and I are scared of problems, so we tend to make them go away too quickly.

      Love and licks,
      C

  12. Not only are you a dog who happens to things, you’re a dog who makes a person happen to things as well. Success by association! Dogs are great at that.

    • Thanks, W. I may have learned that from E. and P. They sure know how to make things happen! And there you and Mom are riding on our coattails…. tails.

      Love and licks,
      C

  13. Leonardo was very wise. Cupcake, your leash is just a part of you, just like your big heart! I love your napping picture and the one of your little bootie sticking up out of the garden! Just stay safe and don’t run around and around any poles!

    • Thanks, P. I know what you mean about the running in circles. When Mom ties me to her lawn chair, sometimes that happens to me. Then suddenly my leash is 2 inches long and we have to disconnect and start over.

      Love and licks,
      C

  14. Oh, Cupcake. The leash is very important. Just imagine all the trouble your mom would get into if she wasn’t attached to you all the time. 😉

Cheers to finding more meat in your mom’s stories and in your food dish…and to a Cupcake unleashed. 😉

    • Thanks, LL. I like the sound of that. …unleashed! Cupcake Unleashed. This might be the start of a story….

      Love and licks,
      C

  16. Cupcake, didn’t you admit to playing stay away or keep away from your Mom and her relatives???? Hmmm. Have you though that might be what is going on with the leash? Mommy only puts me on a leash when we are walking down a street or sidewalk so I don’t get hit by a car. Otherwise, I am good about staying with her.

I do love your patriotic picture. You look like you about to say something…

    • Thanks, L. And yes, there was that one time….. I accidentally (on purpose) pulled my head out of my collar and danced around on the lawn for a few minutes. I also accidentally (on purpose) turned boneless (as my friend Katie Isabella says) when they tried to pick me up. I was like a Slinky.

      Love and licks,
      C

  17. We are ALWAYS attached to the leash too! How are we supposed to be all LeonarDO when mumma is LeonarDON’T? Bella & Beary xox

    • Oh, B. and B. I see what you did there. We’re all LeonarDON’Ts. It’s the price we pay for taking care of our humans.

      Love and licks,
      C

  18. We are tethered to our moms by invisible bonds too Cupcake. I think you do pretty darned good for a dog on a leash. Also Cupcake I love your shirt with the cupcakes on it. It is s o, so….you!

    (((Shoko)))

    • Thanks, S. And thanks for acknowledging our invisible bonds. They’re the best and most powerful “leashes” of all!

      Love and licks,
      C

  19. It must be the same way Simba and Russel feels when they are on leash, but like I always tell them – it’s for their own protection. Some people here don’t know how to drive and I would never let my kids run outside the yard without protecting them.

Seeing you on a leash when you’re outside, just shows me you have a responsible, loving and caring mom who doesn’t want you to get hurt.

I love your Cupcake t-shirt. You are totally adorable! 😀

    • PS: I don’t think Leonardo had a dog. 😆

      • Leonardo totally missed the boat on that one, S. Thanks for the kind words about me and my leash dilemma. Just like S. and R., I do need to be protected from outside forces. …and sometimes from myself! 🙂

        Love and licks,
        C

  20. Enjoyed all your pictures! The street napping… 😀

    • Thanks, Pix. Your profile pic looks like you may be doing some napping of your own! Or at least relaxing.

      Love and licks,
      C

  21. Oh, Cupcake, you look so cute with your patriotic cupcake/mice/cream sweater. That leash is happening to you, Cupcake, because when there’s no you, there wouldn’t be a leash..I think Leonardo must have known that, otherwise he would never made that quote… 😀 Pawkisses for a Happy Week 🙂 ❤

    • Thanks, Little B. I think the leash makes Mom feel better because she says I don’t know how to conduct myself. She’s insecure!

      Love and licks,
      C

  22. Hmm, Cupcake, did Leo have a dog? I think not, thus he had no clue about the leash thingy. Consider it your safety harness, especially when you’re street napping. 😉

    • Thanks, M and S. You’ve got a point. The leash does help Mom drag me into the gutter when I’m napping and a car comes down the street. 🙂

      Love and licks,
      C

  23. That is a great quote Cupcake and Mom. Cupcake, you need to keep that leash on, how else will you keep control over your Mom. She might run off and that wouldn’t be good. You all have a fantastic Sunday.

    • Thanks, M. You’re right. I wouldn’t want Mom to run off and get lost. She has no idea what to do if I don’t lead her.

      Love and licks,
      Cupcake

  24. We work on good stays because I’m too lazy to photoshop leashes out!

    • Ha! That’s a great skill, Mr. N. I don’t have that skill and Mom doesn’t have the photoshop skill. She’s all point, click, post.

      Love and licks,
      Cupcake

  25. That leash is holding you back, dogfriend. (And I wonder who said that ‘leash’ thing. 😉)

    • For sure, G. And yes, the mysterious photographer who noticed the ever-present leash spoke the truth. Apparently, I need it for many reasons.

      Love and licks,
      C

  26. Pulled from the street nap is just the worst….

  27. I feel ya, Cupcake. I have that leash thing going on all the time too. I don’t understand: just because I would run away and maybe never come back is no reason to keep me tied to her side when we’re out walking. *heavy sigh*

  28. Oh Cupcake, I think she’s holding you back…imagine all the fun things you could do without that leash..:-)

  29. Leash!!! Bite them in half… then let them chase you for a while.. its great fun!
