Living with a children's author isn't as easy as it looks!

Best Doctor Ever

photo 1

Today is Dr. Seuss’s birthday. He would’ve been 109 years old. He is the Best Doctor Ever on account of no needles, no looking into ears with a flashlight, no sticks stuck into forbidden places, and no touching of my bits and pieces.

Waiting for the doctor...

Waiting for the Doctor. Hoping for the Best.

Mom also loves Dr. Seuss for a million other reasons – his wild imagination, his silly rhyming, his crazy stories, and the fact that his first book was rejected 27 times before anybody said they liked it. Misery loves company.

Mom’s #1 favorite Dr. Seuss book is The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins from 1938.

500 hats

Normally, Mom and I steer clear of anything that smacks of numbers, but counting those hats is so much fun and so suspenseful that we can’t resist it. Also, a hundred years ago, Mom’s 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Nelson read that story to her class and Mom and her friends giggled and counted and were afraid for poor little Bartholomew not being able to take his hat off for the king.

As of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, Mom is up to date on her 12×12 Challenge. She has written 2 new stories in the past 2 months. Now it’s a new month and time to start a new story.

In which direction should she go?

Direction? Up, of course.

King of the Hill of Filth

King of the Hill of Filth

What will be original?

Original? It doesn’t get any more original than an old dog learning a new trick.

Who will step out of her list of character ideas?

Character? This one.

Or this one.

Or this one.

How will she make the story sparkle?

Sparkle? With a tiara, of course.

Am I sparkling, yet?

Am I sparkling, yet?

  3. Love your costumes!

  4. Cupcake you are the Queen of Costumes! We are excited about today too – my Mom just LOVED (and still does) Dr. Seuss when she was little (who knew they even HAD books in the dinosaur days??!!). I of course liked “Sam, I Am”….but they all make me smile. I’m sure your Mom is up for the challenge of a new story – with you as her inspiration how can she miss?????

    Hugs, Sammy

  5. I like Dr. Seuss too, his books are much better than the cruelty stories in the book of the shockheaded Peter (also written by a Dr., Dr. Hoffman). I like The Grinch and Green Eggs and Ham, Iam Sam, Sam I am :o)

  6. Great photos mom! So cute. That pile of snow is gross!

  7. You are sparkling all over the place! Tell mom “Go get ’em!” And steer clear of the black (and yellow) snow!

How did you pose for that and not put your face into the cup cake?

    • Ha! I DID try to put my face in! Mom said the word, “Leave it,” so I didn’t go through with it. She let me lick the sprinkles when we were finished taking pictures.

      Love and licks,

  9. Cupcake, you put up with a lot to help your mom and her writing. You are such a good girl. I love the tiara and am amazed at how well you wear it. Congratulations to your mom and her two new picture book drafts.

  10. Cute pics πŸ™‚ x

  11. Absolutely delightful! Good luck with your new stories!!! I so understand……….

  12. You do sparkle Cupcake, and you definitely should be the star of the story:-)

  13. How cute! Love your outfits!!! Dr. Seuss was a genius and your mom will someday look back at her writing beginnings and smile for she will have fabulous success too! _ the collies

  14. You always sparkle, Cupcake πŸ™‚

  15. Love your outfits! You are wonderful Cupcake! Any story will sparkle as long as you are in it!

  16. I agree, Cupcake, Dr. Seuss, IS the best doctor! My daughter enjoyed all your photos!

    • Thanks, T. I’ll take a doctor like Seuss any day! I’m glad your little girl likes me. I love little girls. They taste delicious – like candy and gum.

      Love and licks,

  17. I never knew his first book was rejected so many times! It’s always interesting to learn a fact like that. Wouldn’t it be fun to talk to the people that rejected it?
Cupcake, you are really good at balancing on your hind legs! That’s something I can’t do.

    • Thanks, C. It took me a long time to learn to sit up. I kept holding onto Mom for dear life. I had to practice until I strengthened my core. I think the people who rejected Dr. Seuss are hiding under a rock.

      Love and licks,

  18. I need to check out that book! I haven’t read it! πŸ˜€

  19. Oh Cupcake, you in a tutu.. β™₯

  20. oh sweet Cupcake, no one sparkles like you. Dr Seuss was pretty incredible

  21. I bet Dr. Seuss would love your mom’s stories and be tickled that he had inspired her.

  22. Shine on, Cupcake.

  23. Cupcake, cover your ears for this comment. Genevieve, I am howling so hard at all of Cupcake’s outfits. She is one great dog to put up with all the changes she has to withstand, but I’m sure she did it all for Dr. Seuss. What a superb story teller he was. Just think, one day the world may say that about you. Enjoy Cupcake and keep writing. πŸ™‚

  24. Cupcake,
Listen you might need to know your mom has really gone over the top in your clothing department!

    • I think so, too, L. She can’t resist buying them and I can’t resist wearing them to make people smile about me. We’re a dangerous combination.

      Love and licks,

  25. Those are really cute pictures!

  26. Cucpake you are one of the most talented friends we have. You dress up, do tricks and help your mom write. You’re one special friend!

You do sparkle, Cupcake! How many outfits do you own? It’s as if you were once in a circus with your fancy costumes and stunts! Dr. Seuss continues to inspire and so do you!

    • Thanks, LL. I have a LOT of outfits. Getting dressed up makes me excited and happy and usually we go someplace fun like the library or the Veterans Home to make people smile.

      Love and licks,

  28. That is so encouraging to know Dr. Seuss was rejected so many times before becoming one of the most famous authors ever!!!! Your outfits are adorable Cupcake!!!! Strike a pose!!!! Hugs

  29. You really know how to work a tiara, and the tutu is just icing on a Cupcake. πŸ™‚

    • Thanks, Miss HL. That is a very special look for me. The tiara only stays on for 10 seconds. Having a flat head isn’t as easy as you’d think.

      Love and licks,

  30. Nothing like being the center of attention. I suspect your wardrobe is much larger than your mom’s wardrobe. Why don’t you take pictures of her?

Need to check out the Dr. Seuss book as I have not seen that one before.

    • You will LOVE that book, P. It’s so much fun and so exciting. Mom got me ANOTHER dress yesterday. I think I do have more outfits than she does.

      Love and licks,

    I hope you’re having a fun day,

    Your pal Snoopy πŸ™‚

  32. I never even heard of the 500 hats books and i love dr. suess!

  33. Wow! What a big day! Birthday cakes and candles and costumes and books and sparkles! Whew! My favorite Dr Seuss are Go Dog Go and Ten Apples Up On Top. You sure offer your Mom a lot of inspiration for her stories. I don’t know why she seems to have such trouble.

    • Ususally when I’m giving Mom my best inspirations, she says the word, “Move” and the word, “Get off me.” She doesn’t always appreciate me the way she should.

      Love and licks,

  34. We never knew he was rejected all those times. Just love the photo’s of you Cupcake, super cute and funny πŸ™‚ xxxoxxxx
